Two Worlds and the Internet
I want you to imagine two different worlds.
In World 1, God creates the world and endows human beings with free will. From this point on, what happens is chaotic and unplanned. God creates the stage, but doesn't get involved in the act.
In World 2, God creates the world, and while he still endows human beings with free will, he feels nervous about the possibilities that free will could give birth to. To control this, he decides to fill the world with spirits - angels, demons - which influence human behaviour. This is not to say that humans are without free will, but rather that the table is tilted in a certain direction. Every time a decision is made, there is a devil on only one shoulder. In this world, humans feel free, but those demons are always there.
The question of this article is whether we should understand the Internet as more like World 1 or World 2. Is the internet a setting in which human creativity and freedom is boundless? Or is there a ghost in the machine? Are there demons living inside of the Internet and are they influencing our every move?
